G. Wayne Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons
In response to the growth of the Georgia Tech student body, the Institute is developing the G. Wayne Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons, an estimated $85 million facility which will be dedicated to students' academic enrichment and will offer innovative learning opportunities. Named in honor of former Georgia Tech President Wayne Clough, CE 1964, MS CE 1965, in recognition of his significant commitment to undergraduate education, the Clough Commons is being constructed adjacent to the Price Gilbert Library, literally at the crossroads of campus.
What will set the Clough Commons apart from other student-oriented facilities is a unique and comfortable environment outside the traditional classroom where students can take advantage of hands-on, collaborative, and technologically enhanced teaching and learning opportunities. This facility will encompass:
- modern and innovative science laboratories for foundational biology, chemistry, earth and atmospheric sciences, and physics courses;
- technologically advanced classrooms ranging from intimate seminar classroom settings to tiered lecture halls;
- a single facility housing undergraduate advising, tutoring, student success programs, and other student-centered academic services; and
- sustainable design features that will enable certification as a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) building.
In order to complete the remaining private funding needed for the project, an anonymous donor has made an eight-figure commitment to Georgia Tech, a portion of which is designated for the Clough Commons. The anonymous donor wishes to inspire additional philanthropy through his commitment directed to this signature campus building, a facility that will touch the lives of all Tech undergraduates for generations. Toward that end, the donor will match dollar-for-dollar all gifts and commitments for the Clough Commons up to a maximum of $8.75 million. All gifts and commitments must be paid in full by June 2014 in order to qualify for matching funds. Because the donor wishes to remain completely anonymous and receive no recognition for this commitment, any gifts that trigger matching funds will be recognized at twice their value for commemorative purposes.
For more information on how to make a matching gift in support of the G. Wayne Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons, contact Barrett H. Carson, Vice President for Development.
