Will Boyd

Will Boyd

“Coming to Tech after growing up in a small town expanded my horizons in terms of diversity of academic activities and cultural opportunities, both on campus and in metropolitan Atlanta. As a physics and mathematics major, I have found Tech’s community of students to be intellectually stimulating, from random, late-night philosophical discussions with friends to structured campus interest groups,” said Will Boyd. A current Stamps Leadership Scholar, Boyd took part in the East Asia Summer Program this past summer, an opportunity made possible by the scholarship program. Boyd, whose hometown is Dayton, Tennessee, studied abroad and visited Tokyo, Hong Kong, and other urban centers in East Asia, witnessing first-hand what he learned in the classroom about the economies of the region.

Each year, the top ten entering freshmen (usually five Georgia residents and five non-Georgia residents) are designated as the Penelope W. and E. Roe Stamps IV Leadership Scholars within the President’s Scholarship Program.

This extraordinary initiative seeks to recruit the most promising scholars from across the nation; to foster their development as scholars, leaders, and citizens of the greater community through purposeful programming and enhanced educational opportunities; to mentor and advise them during their Tech career; and to graduate stellar, well-rounded individuals who will serve as leaders in our technologically driven world. These students represent the pinnacle in academic achievement and leadership accomplishment.
“Coming to campus to meet Tech’s fantastic crop of President’s Scholars is something that my wife, Penny, and I always look forward to because we get so much energy and inspiration from them,” said Stamps. “These amazing young people are so bright and so motivated not only to do well in life for themselves, but also to find ways of making a real difference in other people’s lives.”

Stamps, vice chairman of the Campaign Georgia Tech Steering Committee and a member of the Georgia Tech Foundation Board of Trustees, has been involved in a number of student-focused philanthropic efforts, including the renovation of the old Houston Bookstore Mall into the Penny and Roe Stamps Student Center Commons, the Dr. Edward Roe Stamps III Health Services program in the Joseph P. Whitehead Building and the Stamps Athletic Fields adjacent to the Campus Recreation Center.
